The big, black wolf came towards her, she screamed but no words came out of her mouth. Its many white teeth glistened in the light from the full moon. She had fallen down and was on the ground, crawling backwards. The dry leaves rustled under her shivering body. The wolf came nearer, it was big, bigger than any dog she had ever seen. The eyes were greenish and large, and they were fixed on her eyes. She felt that she couldn’t move, the creature had locked her in its gaze. Suddenly it bended down, preparing to leap. She felt the panic boiling up inside her, her limbs refused to move. It jumped…

Jane Parker is a regular police officer in the London police department. She was one of the best officers on the office even if some jealous co-workers disagreed with that.  Her boss was one of the few that appreciated her. Ha was a middle age man with black hair, starting to get grey in the temple, and with green eyes. His name was Oscar Gordon.

He had a creepy way of telling if people lied or, for example, were drinking during working hours. Not many of them had the courage to ask him about it, and even fewer had got answers they understood. Jane was curious of course, but she had never asked him about it.

She was an attractive woman with mature curves, red hair and brown eyes.

It was Tuesday worning and she sat at her desk when the phone rang.

 - London PD, Jane Parker, she answered.

  - I want to report a body, said the voice in the phone, it sounded like an older man, his tone revealed that he was scared.

 - Could you please tell me your name and your position?

 - I am in the woods south of Hyde Park corner, it’s a woman, and she’s dead.

 - Yes I understand that, could I please get your name?

 - I’m George, George Black.

 - Ok, you just stay there and we are comming down there immediately.

 - Ok, thanks, the shivering answer came back. He hung up.

 - We have a body in Hyde Park, there is a man waiting there for us, c’mon. Jane said to Oscar.

Outside it was an early morning at late autumn and almost all the leaves had fallen off the trees and made the ground orange, yellow and red. It was cold in the air so she took her worm jacket and left for the car after letting the crime scene investigators know that it was a body in Hyde Park.

Jane parked as close to the park as she could and stepped out of the car to look around to see if she could spot George. Soon she saw an older man in a long grey coat waving at them. Oscar also stepped out of the car after bringing his notebook from the pocket under the seat.

George sat on a bench under a tree and stood up when ha saw the police officers come towards him. He was relived to finally see them there, it had been un unpleasant experience to find the dead woman.

George showed them were his dog had found the body. He didn’t want to go near the body again, so he stopped and pointed out the place for the police officers. Jane walked along with Oscar to find the corpse.

 - What do you think we’ll find? Jane asked her boss. Mr Black looked all sick when ever he was talking about it.

 - Of course he’s shocked, this is probably the first dead guy he’s ever found.

 - Yes, of course, never thought of that…

She said no more, the dead woman was on the ground in front of them. She was right in the open under a couple of trees, she was lying on her back with her arms and legs spread from her body. Her brown hair was untied and in a sun formation around her head. The dead eyes were open and starred with fright at the sealing of naked branches.

The thing that shocked Jane was the gigantic hole she hade in her chest. Her ribs hade been broken up and it looked like some of her inner organs hade been removed. Her sweater was all red in blood and had holes as if an animal hade ripped it open. The skin beneath was broken.

The paturologist came over to the crime scene in a white overall, with his bag in his right hand. His apprentice was taking pictures of the crime scene. The temperature in the victim’s lever reviled that she had been killed during the night, around midnight.

 - Bloody hell, what happened here? Jane asked, who ever that could answer her.

 - Well, I can tell you more at the station morgue, but so far I can tell you that she is a female in her early thirties and she was killed during the night. From the wounds on her chest I would guess a large dog killed her. But a normal dog does not kill in this way, buy the way, dogs aren’t suppose to kill humans at all, so I can’t tell you just yet what did this.

 - Yes, you do that, Oscar said while observing Jane who was watching the corpse with an interested look.

 - What do you think? Oscar asked Jane for the second time before she reacted.

 - O, sorry, I don’t know. This is the first time I have ever seen something like this.

 - That makes two of us…

The victims’ wallet told them her name was Mary Thatch.

Everyone was back at the station, the body was in the autopsy room and the lab had gotten all the samples they had found on the body and on the ground.

Jane was at here desk, going through the photos from the crime scene. Because of the leaves on the ground there were no foot prints in the earth. But it looked like Mary had crawled and fallen before her killer had attacked her. So, she was fleeing from something, what?

When she got back from lunch an hour later, Jane was called in to Oscars’ office. Oscar was holding the autopsy report in his hands. He reached the report over the desk to her, she took it and opened it up. The folder contained a picture of Mary, the one from her identification and one of her taken after her death. There were all the facts that they had found out about her, no partner, no children and the parents are dead. Nothing in the crime record either.

The other pages were the actual autopsy report. She hade been killed during the night between Monday and Tuesday. The ribs hade been broken up in the middle and the heart had been removed roughly, it had been torn out and not cut out with a knife, and was now gone. They had found half long, black hairs on the body and scratch marks from four parallel claws in several places on her upper body. There had also been a huge bite mark over the victims’ throat with obvious teeth marks. It was clear that it was some kind of dog that had killed her, hopefully the hairs would tell them what kind, Jane thought.

Jane continued to read out loud from the lab papers.

 - The hairs are from a… wolf? There are no wolves here in England, at least no wild ones, and in the middle of the city? Jane said all of it with doubt in her voice. I am going to call the local zoos’ to see if they are missing any of their animals.

 - You don’t need to do that, we have already done that and we found nothing.

 - Ok fast work, she continued to read: the bite marks on the victims’ neck are also similar to a wolfs’ jaws. They have done a plaster copy, and matched it with a large zoo wolf. And this one is ever bigger than he is which don’t say a little.

It was five in the afternoon and Jane was starting to get ready to leave for home when Oscar came to her and said:

 - Make sure to get home and eat and get some sleep, I have an idea how we may find this doggy. How do you think about staying up tonight and supervise the park?

 - That is a really good idea, but do you really think it’s coming back tonight?

 - You can never know but let’s say it’s a hunch.

At half past ten Jane drove up and parked next to the park, Oscar had said he would meet her there, but she could not spot him anywhere. She tried to call him but got no answer.

At eleven she saw a man under a streetlamp on the side walk, she could swear it was Oscar. Jane stepped out of the car and called to him. He stopped and turned against her, suddenly he turned and ran in among the trees.

Jane jumped when her phone rang, she picked it up and answered. While slowly following Oscar into the dark.

 - Jane Parker… she answered absent.

 - Hi, it’s the lab. We have accidentally don a mix-up with some hairs for DNA-test. We ran the wolfs hair and it showed a match to Oscar Gordon, we even ran it twice to make sure. He said all this very fast.

 - Ok, thank you, Jane said a little confused and hung up.

The full moon was almost cleared from clouds when Jane saw Oscar again. With an icing feeling along her spine she moved forward. When she came closer she could see he hade no clothes on his body.

 - You know, fright is one of the best smells in the world. It so real. You can’t lie about it and you can’t hide it. He said this with a smile.

 - What do you mean?

 - Have you ever heard about lycans, loup garou, werewolves? Have you ever tasted a fresh, raw heart? Full with warm blood? He was looking at her with his glowing green eyes. She felt that she was scared but she couldn’t move. It’s a special feeling, all that warm blood in your mouth and all that power in your body. You can’t resist it, you can feel the blood thirst and you just want to see what your body is capable of. It’s amazing really.

The moon came out in the open and suddenly Oscar bended forward as in pain and what happened next made Jane gasp. His body transformed, his hair grew back over his body and covered it with fur. A tail broke the skin from the tailbone and got covered in long black fur. His arms and legs grew longer and his fingers and feet changed into paws. The ears re-shaped and took a wolfs’ form.

When he raised his head to the sky and howled he looked completely like a wolf, but much bigger and far more deadly. He was more than a meter high at the shoulders.

Jane just could not take in what just happened, a man had turned into a wolf right before her eyes. All that talk about werewolves? Hade it just been a teaser on what was waiting? Was he going to kill her?

The werewolf suddenly started to move fast towards her, and all her thoughts just left her head in a flash of fright. She was frozen in a moment and could not move, the wolf moved even faster towards her.

A bird flew up from a nearby tree, and Jane lost her concentration on how scared she was for a second and realised she could move again. She turned and ran, but she didn’t get far, she could hear the monster behind her and turned her head to se how close it was. The black wolf growled at her and jumped, she put up her left arm and the beasts teeth sank into it, at the same time as its’ massive weight knocked her to the ground. She kicked it but it was strong and nothing happened, the wolf was nagging on her arm, spots were dancing before her eyes because of the pain. The werewolf let go and bit her again in the sane arm. Jane screamed of fright and punched the monster in the face with her other hand, she hit its’ eyes and it suddenly let go of her with a whine. It staggered away and shook its head in pain.

Then Jane remembered her gun, pulled it up and was just about to shot the wolf when it ones again jumped on her and started to bite in her already damaged arm. The gun was thrown away and landed a few meters away from the fight. The monster let go of her and started to circle her.

Jane rolled over and crawled towards the weapon. The grass became red with her blood. When the werewolf realised were she was going it grabbed her ankle and pulled her in the other direction. Jane screamed in fright, she could no longer feel pain because of the adrenalin. She kicked with her free foot and felt that she hit it in the head, when it let go she quickly crawled to the gun.

Jane rolled over on her back with the pistol before her, everything happened in slow motion when she saw the monster in the air above her, all the teeth were visible and the eyes sparkled with anger. She never heard the blast but a change in the face of her enemy told her the bullet had hit its target. It crashed on the ground next to her, but the last thing she saw before fainting was her opponent crawling away and disappear.

When Jane woke up she was in a hospital bed, her wounded limbs were in bandage, she remembered everything from Wendsday but she didn’t feel afraid on what was waiting, she felt safe. The alarm clock next to her bed told her it was Friday.

Six months later Jane felt better than ever, she was more alert than earlier and her wounds had healed a long time ago. She had gotten the chiefs position after Oscar Gordon disappeared. Now she was that person that everyone respected.

It was full moon tonight and Jane left earlier from work. She had left her apartment in the city and moved to a nice, small house in the outskirts of London.

At eleven that night she took all of her clothes off and placed them on the bed, she opened the bedroom window, and let the moon shine hit her. It was not a woman coming out the window and disappearing into the woods, it was a big red wolf that tonight would sit on a hill and howl to the moon next to its black mate.
